JOB SUMMARY:

WJRT is looking for a Journalist.

WJRT-TV, ABC12, is looking for a Highly Motivated Journalist at Flint / Saginaw / Bay City Market. The successful candidate should be an excellent storyteller who has strong writing skills, solid news judgment and is able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, with a minimum of 3 years of journalism experience broadcast as a journalist or MMJ. This is not an entry level position. We are looking for someone who will create sources in the community, who has an eye and an ear for compelling videos and sounds. A reporter who can delve into investigative stories and ask essential key questions our viewers want to know. Familiarity with the use of TVU and Dejero live equipment, an asset. Occasionally, you may be asked to be an MMJ as needed.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

· The reporter will be responsible for the live shootings, writing and daily publication of multiple stories to be broadcast as well as all media platforms of WJRT under tight deadlines.

Must also be strong at handling breaking news and covering extreme weather conditions, being able to make sound decisions in a split second during live broadcasts.

Ability to shoot and edit videos with knowledge of electronic news gathering and nonlinear editing

Strong skills in web publishing, working with social media, and collecting user-generated content are important.

· Knowledge of ENPS desired.

BS / BA in Journalism / Communications or equivalent training

Highly developed public speaking and interpersonal skills

Essential experience of 3 years in television in the top 150 of the market

Extensive experience in broadcasting television news

Professional and consistent appearance on the air

Advanced critical thinking skills

Understands social media and the importance of engaging viewers

Fast and efficient decision-making skills

Comfortable with live ad-libbing

Ability to operate under varying degrees of pressure and the ability to change gears quickly

· Hours, shifts and responsibilities are flexible and can be changed at the discretion of CIOs.

Must reside in the market area

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 2 years of experience as Reporter, MMJ, additional experience desired
  • Ability to shoot and edit (Edius experience is a plus)
  • Excellent time management skills

· Candidates should be able to quickly develop contacts and work sources and be a team player with strong communication skills.
