The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Memorial University invites applications for the highly prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program (CERC) with specialization in Integration of cultural heritage knowledge into ocean and maritime studies. The 2022 CERC competition aims to attract world-class researchers to Canada with the high potential to generate social and economic benefits through their research aligned with priority areas of science, technology and innovation (ST&I) in the Canada. The stipend for this non-renewable position is $500,000/year for 8 years for a total of $4M, with all funds available to the candidate for research activities. The CERC holder will be appointed to a full-time tenure-track faculty position.

The successful candidate will be an established and internationally recognized leader in their field. They will be expected to create an externally funded research agenda and provide expertise and leadership in the development of digital infrastructures and methods that support the sustainable transformation of institutional archives into digital data stores offering new computational modes of access to an extensive world-class archive. assets. The candidate must have expertise in one or more fields and areas related to the integration of knowledge of cultural holdings, such as: archival and information sciences; digital repositories as well as their design and architectures; large-scale digitization, data mining and information retrieval; and open data and related application programming interfaces. This should be combined with expertise in digital humanities and the diverse multicultural socio-economic histories of indigenous and colonial oceanic and maritime societies and cultures from the 19th to 21st centuries. The candidate should have a proven track record in building collaborative research networks that combine archival, historical, computational and information science methodologies in innovative ways.

The selection process will be conducted in consultation with Memorial’s Office of Indigenous Affairs, as well as the research and teaching components of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The nomination of a candidate for the advertised position is conditional on the success of CERC’s application. The application process has 3 steps. For Stage I, candidates will submit an application to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; details on the selection process are available here. The request must include:

  • a cover letter outlining their suitability for the CERC program (1-3 pages); a curriculum vitae including the names and contact details of at least three referees; a brief research plan covering the 8-year term of the CERC position (1-3 pages); a statement on how the nominee’s research program promotes and implements best practices in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) (1-3 pages); a statement of how the nominee’s research program could develop new connections, synergies and knowledge exchange between academia, government, industry and Canada’s northern and Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador (1-3pages).

For Stage II, applicants will be selected from a shortlist and interviewed. The successful candidate will be, at the time of appointment to the CERC program (Stage III), either: at the academic level of Full Professor; at the academic level of Associate Professor eligible for promotion to the rank of Full Professor within 2 years; or hold a position outside academia with the equivalent qualifications necessary for appointment to those academic levels. For Stage III, one applicant will be selected as an applicant who will move forward with the co-development of an application with Memorial University for the CERC program.
