One of the biggest status quo changes so far in Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 has been the promotion of Sam Wilson to the role of Captain America. The trip was first organized in Avengers: Endgameand at the end of Disney+ The Falcon and the Winter SoldierAnthony Mackie’s hero officially held the shield.
The character will then play in his own film, Captain America: New World Order. Not much is known about the project yet, but The Leader will be the movie’s big bad, and the story will really test Sam in his new role.
Captain America will be put to the test as, after his fight against The Leader, he will almost certainly play a key role in Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
So, what exactly should fans expect from the character as he presumably leads a new iteration of the World’s Mightiest Heroes? Well, going back to the work of The Kang Dynastyfrom the newly hired writer, fans might already have a good idea of what’s in store for Sam’s future.
Captain America’s future revealed
Recently, it was confirmed that writer Jeff Loveness, who also wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniahas been hired to write the next MCU movie Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
Besides his previous experience with the MCU, a significant part of his writing resume, which also includes rick and morty and miracle workersthis is how he also wrote the comic book series All-New Captain America Special Vol 1.
The special saw several notable points of interest when it came to the portrayal of Sam Wilson’s character.
For one thing, the story takes place shortly after Sam Wilson becomes Captain America following Steve Rogers’ power-off. He has time under his belt, but not too much, and above all, he still doubts himself.
This doubt comes in two forms. For one thing, he doesn’t know how good he’ll be at leading something like the Avengers, which is likely something the MCU’s Sam Wilson will struggle with. the kang dynastyprovided he hasn’t already done so New world order.
On top of that, the comic sees Sam compare himself directly to Steve Rogers. Considering how important Rogers is to Wilson’s MCU history, there will almost certainly be that same behavior when he finds his place.
However, the hero still has some confidence in his own abilities, as seen in his arrogance below:
Given how New world order will come first in the timeline, the Sam Wilson seen in The Kang Dynasty could look more into the trust that’s emanating from here. By then, he’ll probably have been compared to Steve so many times that he’ll be a bit sick of the comparison.
Loveness’ take on the character isn’t without its moments of levity. In fact, it actually includes one of the most shared moments between Sam Wilson and Spider-Man in the comics.
What will Sam’s future MCU path look like?
A writer’s previous work isn’t always an accurate representation of what their next work will look like. Its content certainly does not confirm anything specific for an upcoming project such as The Kang Dynasty— for example, despite the big moment between Spider-Man and Captain America, there’s no guarantee the moment will happen in the MCU.
But nonetheless, it’s fun to speculate.
Given New world orderIn 2024, Sam Wilson will almost certainly be in a much more confident place, at least when it comes to his new coat, by 2025. When The Kang Dynasty comes knocking, this will likely be where Sam will have to deal with his insecurities about leading a team; it would be hard to see anyone other than Captain America leading the main Avengers team, after all.
Jeff Loveness’s work in the comics alone is proof that he has experience juggling all of these serious themes while injecting a bit of humor into the mix – his rick and morty the experience will not wear out.
The real test will be with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will be released in theaters on February 17, 2023. Hopefully, it lives up to extremely rising expectations. In fact, seeing how Loveness has avengers 5 in his hands, he might even need to go beyond that.
Avengers: Kang Dynasty released on May 2, 2025.
