Tropical Cyclone Mitchell: A Category 3 Storm Brewing
Get ready for a powerful storm, folks! Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is about to intensify and make its presence known in Western Australia's Pilbara region. But here's where it gets controversial: some are predicting it could reach Category 3 status before making landfall.
Currently positioned about 145km north of Port Hedland, Mitchell is already packing a punch as a Category 2 storm. And it's not slowing down; it's on a path to strengthen as it moves north of Karratha overnight.
The Bureau of Meteorology is on high alert, anticipating heavy rainfall and flash flooding later today. Wind gusts have already been recorded at a whopping 130km/h! That's some serious wind power.
The warning zone covers a wide area, from De Grey to Ningaloo, including key towns like Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow, Exmouth, Pilbara, and Pannawonica. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a 'Watch and Act' warning to residents in Whim Creek to Mardie, including Barrow Island and Montebello Islands. The message is clear: 'There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a cyclone is approaching.'
An evacuation centre will be open in Karratha Leisureplex from midday today, so residents in the area should be prepared to take shelter if needed.
For those south of Mardie to Carnarvon and inland to Pannwonica, now is the time to get ready. And for those in Pardoo Roadhouse to east of Whim Creek, keep a close eye on the conditions and be ready to act.
Mitchell is expected to maintain a steady pace of 16km/h as it travels south towards the Pilbara coast tomorrow. It's predicted to stick around until Monday, when it finally makes landfall.
The forecast calls for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding in the area, which could extend to the west Gascoyne region. And here's the part most people miss: very destructive winds are expected to reach Onslow and possibly Exmouth. Abnormally high tides are also a concern, as they could cause serious flooding in the Karratha region early tomorrow morning and then in Onslow by the afternoon.
While Mitchell is expected to downgrade to a Category 2 storm by Monday night and then a Category 1 by Tuesday, the impact it leaves in its wake could be significant.
