Ethno-nationalist group National Workers Alliance disrupts Tim Wilson's event
An event hosted by Federal MP Tim Wilson was disrupted by members of the ethno-nationalist group National Workers Alliance. The group's leader, Matt Trihey, shouted about immigration and crime, causing police to be called to the scene. The incident occurred during a forum titled 'How do we build a respectful society?' held at a hotel in Bentleigh, Melbourne's southeast, on Thursday evening.
The police were called due to claims of 'three males causing trouble'. The men had left the premises before the police arrived, and the authorities are now making further inquiries. A video posted by the National Workers Alliance shows Trihey speaking forcefully to the attendees, demanding that politicians address immigration and crime.
Trihey claims that he and three others were at the venue by 'pure coincidence' and that they entered the event because the door was open and it was a public event. He denied any police investigation and stated that his group left when asked. The National Workers Alliance has made headlines in the past due to a speaker performing a Nazi salute, which was later found to be done mockingly.
Trihey has also claimed that people with 'European blood' face an 'existential threat' from immigration and organized a March For Australia event last year. After the disruption, Wilson wrote on social media that the meeting was 'stormed by the CFMEU and Neo-Nazis'. However, the National Workers Alliance denies being a neo-Nazi organization and warns Wilson of potential defamation.
The group's social media post on Thursday night stated that they were 'present' at the event and simply asked questions that reasonable Australians want answers to. The post also mentioned that some of the people disrupting the event were wearing CFMEU shirts, though this has not been confirmed by the union.
