In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister—who represents Holborn and St Pancras—expressed concern about rising measles cases in Enfield and stressed the importance of vaccines as safe, effective, and potentially life-saving.
Starmer’s call comes after a wave of worry about misinformation surrounding vaccines. He explicitly criticized any platform or voices that spread unfounded theories about immunizations, reminding the public that public health should not be treated as a political battleground. He emphasized that leaders should champion science to protect children rather than amplify conspiracy theories.
A minister sequence warned that debunking false claims about the measles vaccine is essential to stop outbreaks in London. Health authorities are actively tracking how the virus is spreading in Enfield to prevent a wider spread, with dozens of cases already reported.
According to BBC Breakfast, a north London outbreak has raised alarms: the vaccination push is critical, especially for children who have not yet received their vaccines.
Health officials have reiterated that the MMR vaccine is scientifically safe and does not cause autism, a claim that has been repeatedly debunked. Experts urge a clear, evidence-based conversation about vaccination to counter myths and misinformation.
There is particular concern about Enfield’s comparatively low vaccination rates. Officials say they need to understand why local uptake is lagging and how to address barriers that prevent families from getting themselves and their children vaccinated.
The UK Health Security Agency confirmed 34 laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Enfield between January 1 and February 9. Analysts warn that vaccination coverage for measles has stalled in recent years, contributing to a larger, ongoing outbreak primarily affecting unvaccinated children under 10 in schools and nurseries.
In response, more than 60 suspected cases have been reported across seven schools and a nursery in Enfield.

She reaffirmed that two doses of the MMRV vaccine provide strong protection and can help prevent further outbreaks, underscoring the preventable nature of this disease.
Earlier this year, global health authorities stated that the UK is no longer considered measles-free. UKHSA data from 2024/25 showed only about 64.3% of five-year-olds in Enfield had completed both doses of the MMR vaccine, a rate among the lowest in the country.
Enfield Council has stated it is actively collaborating with the UKHSA, the NHS, and local partners to respond to the outbreak.
