KMD, a leading architectural design and fabrication company, is looking for a designer who can make a big impact working with our talented and diverse group of designers, carpenters, metalworkers and finishers.

Our team is known for creating unique items that become the feature and focus of our clients’ projects. As specialists in one-of-a-kind projects, we are a trusted partner for the Bay Area’s leading architects, designers and general contractors. We’re looking for someone who can help us build on that reputation in a fun, collaborative environment.

This is a job for someone who is happy to support various design prompts. Daily responsibilities are constantly changing. One day you’ll be in the shop working on a prototype with our makers, the next day you’ll be creating concept renders, and then maybe creating a marketing presentation. This is not the place where you will spend two weeks doing the same thing (no time slot!)

Projects range from one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture to large-scale architectural installations that include handcrafted wood, metal, glass, kinetic elements and lighting, to name a few.

Responsibilities:
Work with Principal on design development and client presentations
Create ready-to-use manufacturing drawings
Work with shop personnel on QC projects under construction
Site visits for expertise and installation assistance
Assistance in estimating new works
Marketing support – graphic design, photography supervision, website updates, etc.
Communicate with design partners to clarify details, submit RFIs, etc.
Organize and maintain project notes

Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of design experience. Ideally, some of this time was spent learning the ropes and best practices at a reputable architectural firm or similar.
Expertise in working with Rhino. Other 3D modeling programs are a plus.
Insatiable appetite to learn new processes, new materials and new tools.
A talent for solving problems and creating elegant design solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Able to travel to construction sites in the Bay Area.
Legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship at this time.

Bonus points
Proficiency in Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
Thorough understanding of the material properties of steel, aluminum and wood.
Thorough knowledge of wood and metal fabrication.
Graphic design experience.
Export experience for CNC – both 2D cut lines and 3D shapes.

We are open to this being a full-time or part-time position, with a minimum of 24 hours per week, up to 40 hours. This position is based in our San Francisco office. Occasional remote work is possible, but the collaborative and physical nature of our work requires our team to be together under one roof.

We offer a competitive salary, profit sharing, health care allowance, vacation and paid vacation and sick leave as well as education reimbursement. We want you to grow, be supported and succeed with us!

If you think you are a good candidate for this position and our firm, please send us a message with the following:
